On Friday, the Chamber Choir and Wind Ensemble traveled to Seattle. We did a tour at the Cornish School of the Arts, a private visual and performing arts college in downtown. It included a presentation from the Music Department Chair, as well as a visit to the student dorm which boasts a ridiculously good view of the Space Needle. We saw all the dance and visual art spaces in addition to the music rooms.
In the evening, the Garfield High School Jazz Bands put on a fundraiser concert at The Triple Door. It featured all the Garfield jazz band students in small jazz combos (about 5 kids), and Thomas Marriott, a Garfield alum and Seattle jazz icon. Marching band is king in other parts of the country, but in Seattle, jazz is in charge, and Garfield is the leader. It was fun to watch our students get amazed by their peers!
