Community Engagement Board (CEB)

Purpose

Community Engagement Boards (CEBs) meet with youth and families referred by their school district to address barriers to student attendance. They engage in discussions to understand challenges and provide recommendations to improve attendance. By partnering with students and families, CEBs identify obstacles, develop actionable plans, and connect them with resources that enhance school engagement, aiming to reduce referrals to Skagit County Juvenile/Truancy Court.

CEBs offer access to services like functional family therapy and “wraparound” mental health support. They may recommend transfers to other schools, alternative programs, or dropout prevention initiatives. Additionally, they can suggest referrals to juvenile courts for resources like HOPE centers or crisis residential facilities. With a restorative focus, CEB members help families problem-solve and create plans to improve attendance, empowering at-risk students for better educational outcomes.

Team Support & Structure

The Community Engagement Board (CEB) is a volunteer board made up of members trained in key areas related to student attendance. All members learn about La Conner’s attendance policy, the CEB process, racial equity, and motivational interviewing. Additionally, they receive training in:

  • Identifying barriers to school attendance

  • Using a barriers to attendance assessment tool

  • Culturally responsive interactions

  • Trauma-informed discipline

  • Evidence-based support for at-risk youth and families

  • Local services and treatments available

This training ensures CEB members can effectively address the challenges students and families face. CEB meetings are held monthly for up to two hours, with volunteers rotating based on membership.
