High School Profile

Welcome to the new year here at La Conner High School where our goal is to support student learning in order to prepare each to shape his or her own future as responsible adult citizen.

Over the past four years the staff at our school has pursued continuous improvement through a cycle of reviewing our mission, gathering data, setting goals, researching, planning, monitoring and constantly adjusting to meet the academic and social needs of our students. On the third week of September we completed our third data carousel during which the entire staff gathered to review student data and to write narrative statements which will help us to improve or refine our goals in the areas of math/science, reading and climate.

Our research and data reviews have convinced the staff that our students will benefit by more constructivist approaches to high school materials. In constructivist classrooms students increase ownership of their own learning, work collaboratively to increase their knowledge and have ample opportunity to express their understanding through a wider range of assessment options. In algebra and geometry these needs have been met by adopting College Preparatory Math (CPM), a curriculum that features cooperative learning and emphasizes how math is a foundation for much of what we do in life. In reading we began by focusing on the comprehension strategies that increase each student’s ability to understand demanding text across all high school subjects. Our research has led us to decrease class interruptions, improve the use of instructional time, utilize community support services and poll our learning community annually to give us a gauge on progress being made.

One of our measures of academic success is provided by student achievement on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Each year under the federal legislation called No Child Left Behind (NCLB) we are required to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on math and reading as well as our cohort graduation rate. In each case this year, we met or exceeded the required standard. We are especially proud of our 9-12 cohort graduation rate which has increased annually over the past three years. This improvement is due mainly to the efforts of our staff, who definitely provide a supportive learning environment for every student who comes through our doors.
